Acupuncture to treat Sciatica nerve

Acupuncture can help to treat certain disorders: pain, skin care, ENT diseases or disorders of the bones and joints. ,It is effective in treating cases of sciatica, tendinitis or to improve pain related to osteoarthritis.
What is the action of acupuncture on sciatica?

Acupuncture: Sciatica in brief

Sciatica is characterized by intense pain localized along the sciatic nerves. There are two sciatic nerves running behind each leg to reach the lower back.

Localization of pain

The pain caused by sciatica is most often located:

  • Either in a thigh (at the back of the leg);
  • Either in one of the two buttocks;
  • Or at the lower back.

Main causes of sciatica

Sciatica may appear in different cases:

  • On account of the inflammation of the nerve or pyramidal muscle;
  • Because of intense pressure on the sciatic nerve, which happens when the person has a problem of osteoarthritis;
  • Because of a trauma: for example, after a fall, a false movement, a serious accident, etc. ;
  • In some people with osteoarthritis or arthritis, but also in some pregnant women, sciatica may manifest itself more frequently than in other populations.

Acupuncture and sciatica: the session

Efficiency

As with any other intervention, the physician-acupuncturist will orient his / her sessions (duration, frequency, number) after a first interview with the patient and after an initial diagnosis based on the principles of MTC.
Tests have been able to demonstrate that acupuncture, by promoting the production of endorphins, allows it to play a significant role in the treatment of pain.

Steps

The steps are therefore often the following:

  • Preliminary interview,
  • Examination by the acupuncturist of the patient and the region of the sciatica as well as of the meridian related to this region (to establish a "map" of the acupuncture points)
  • Taking a pulse and examining the tongue for fatigue (general fatigue may have weakened the entire body and caused inflammation of the tendon).
  • All this brings the practitioner to an energy balance which will then allow him to "repair" by bringing back the energy balance of the patient where he is lacking.

Once this is done, the practitioner will be able to proceed to the sessions properly speaking. In general, the sessions last 15 to 20 minutes and there is often an improvement from the first session.
But each case is unique, and each patient will have their own treatment and number of sessions adapted according to their problem.
To treat sciatica, the acupuncturist can use between 10 and 15 needles. The care is not painful and it is not dangerous since they are disposable needles.
