Neuropathic Pain 

Neuropathic pain is a complex condition, chronic pain that is usually accompanied by tissue injury. With neuropathic pain, the nerve fibers themselves can be damaged, dysfunctional or injured. These damaged nerve fibers send erroneous signals to other centers of pain. The impact of the nerve fiber injury includes a change in nerve function both on the site of the lesion and in areas around the wound.

An example of neuropathic pain is called phantom limb syndrome. This rare disease occurs when an arm or leg has been removed due to illness or injury, but the brain still receives pain messages from the nerves that initially bore the impulses of the missing limb. These nerves are now inflamed and cause pain.

Causes of neuropathic pain

To diagnose neuropathic pain, a physician will be interviewed and physically examined. He or she can ask questions, how would you describe your pain, if the pain occurs, or if something specifically triggers the pain. The doctor may also ask for blood tests and nerves.

Treatment of neuropathic pain

According to some studies, neuropathic pain suggest the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aleve or Motrin, can relieve pain. Some people may have a stronger analgesic, for example by requiring morphine. Anticonvulsants and antidepressants seem to work in some cases.

If another condition, like diabetes, is involved, may be a better treatment of this disorder to relieve pain. Effective treatment of a condition can also help prevent other nerve damage.

In cases that are difficult to treat, can be a pain specialist with an invasive or implantable device, to effectively manage the pain. The electrical stimulation of the nerves that are involved in neuropathic pain, can control the symptoms of significant pain.
